RIYADH: New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has arrived in Saudi Arabia, the first stop of his three-country Gulf tour aimed at strengthening economic ties and expanding investment opportunities.
Speaking on Sunday, Murphy said New Jersey, a US leader in the innovation economy, matches well with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals.
His visit focuses on key sectors such as technology and AI, life sciences, film and television, fintech, and the green economy.
Murphy’s trip, sponsored by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, comes two weeks ahead of former President Donald Trump’s state visit to the Kingdom.
Murphy emphasized Saudi Arabia’s importance to the US and highlighted opportunities to advance Vision 2030 initiatives.
A highlight of the visit was the signing of a letter of intent between King Saud University and Rutgers University, establishing collaboration in public policy research and other academic fields to foster innovation and attract investment.
The governor also underlined New Jersey’s potential as a hub for AI innovation, renewable energy, and manufacturing, citing the state's highly educated workforce and strategic location.
He noted opportunities for partnerships, including cross-investments and talent exchanges in AI and digitalization with Saudi Arabia.
Murphy stressed the need for strategic economic policies amidst current global trade tensions and tariffs, expressing optimism for stronger Saudi-American cooperation across sectors.
He also discussed expanding ties in sports, film, and television, highlighting New Jersey’s hosting of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final and the upcoming World Club Cup, where Saudi club Al-Hilal is expected to compete.
Following his visit to Saudi Arabia, Murphy will continue his tour in Bahrain and the UAE to further discuss economic and cultural cooperation.
